For the first trimester students will be participating in a book club to meet their independent reading requirement. The information below will apply to trimesters 2 and 3.
This is not applicable for trimester #1!!
I/R Term requirements are 15 points!
Step 1-Choosing a book! Students will have the opportunity to check out books every two weeks, as a class, at the EAMS Library. They are able to choose 3 books at a time so should never be without reading material. Students will choose their book(which they haven't read before) based on their lexiles. Most of books in our library are marked by lexile and point value which makes it easy to find appropriate reading. Students may also opt to bring books from home, use the public library or the library in my classroom. The lexile must be checked and this can be done through our middle school LMC website. The upper right side of that page has the link to Scholastic Reading Counts which allows students to check for the lexile and point value. If a lexile can not be found, students must confer with me about appropriateness of book, point value and what method they intend to get points.
Step 2- Read the book!
Step 3-Earn your points! There are 3 ways for students to earn points.
- Reading Counts test- Students will take a 20 question test on the book. This test will be taken in my room, in my presence. If they don't pass the test, they may take it one more time. If they don't pass again, they will need to talk to me about their book and another option. Only one test may be taken on a given day.
- Write a book report. -Because of increasing incidences of plagiarism, this option will also include a teacher conference. Students will write a 2 page report including main events, discussion of setting and its importance, opinion of main character /characters with explanation, description of the main problem and how it was solved, and reflection (your thoughts and feelings about the book).
-Journal Entries- Students will divide their books into 10 reading sections (I can help with this). Upon finishing each section students will write at least 2 complete paragraphs including main events, character insight and thoughts or feelings about the section being addressed.
-Other options may be available if needed.
All students may read blue star books, even if their lexile is higher that 1500.
Students may readi 1 book of the Wimpy Kid or Dork Diaries per year for points.
Graphic novels are not to be used for points.
Any book that has a movie must be done as a journal (see above) for points.
Odyssey-Students are required to complete 1 lessons per week. When the test is taken and a 70% is achieved, it is considered complete.
